With a predator call and camera, I set up near a deer carcass to snap photos of scavenging foxes and coyotes.

I had just begun to blow my call when I turned and saw a Redtail Hawk with its talons extended, about to slam right into my head.

Instinctively, I raised my arm to fend of the bird’s attack!

The talons got snagged in my sleeve, trapping the bird. I wiggled free of the jacket and snapped a picture of my assailant.

Eventually I managed to shake the Hawk loose. It flew away, probably as surprised as I had been.
