Arkansas has had a “three-point buck rule” in effect for five years, and it has paid off well for improved harvest of mature 21/2- to 31/2-year-old bucks. That regulation is slated to be imposed on federal wildlife refuges within the state this year. Last year’s harvest (155,000) was down 20 percent from the previous season due to hot, dry weather, so the “carryover” this fall should be excellent. Hunters looking for older, larger bucks should target the eastern part of the state, where farms and fertile ground are plentiful.
