“We had another mild winter, which means a big carryover of prime does and excellent fawn recruitment,” says biologist John Urbain, estimating the current herd at 1.9 million. Urbain says Michigan hunters get trophy bucks in the largely public U.P. counties of Houghton, Baraga and Ontonagon, and the mostly private southern counties of Jackson, Calhoun, Branch and Washtenaw.
