Wildfires and a tough winter have hurt the Elko County herd, and permits have been slashed in Areas 6 and 7. The high country of central and northwestern Nevada, specifically Areas 11, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17, should have the capacity to take up the slack, though hunter quotas in northwestern units can be small. State biologists expect a lower-than-average harvest this fall.
