Big-racked deer in New York have traditionally come from the Adirondacks, and they still do, mainly the St. Lawrence River valley, where farmland is reverting to woodlands. But stand-out suburban hunting is found around Albany, Buffalo and Rochester and throughout Long Island, though access can be tough. For sheer whitetail numbers, hunt the central and western agricultural areas. For the first time ever, blackpowder hunters are allowed to use scopes during the special muzzleloader season. There are numerous other regulation changes, so read the regulations book closely.
