The GFD issued a record combined 116,925 whitetail and mule deer tags this summer, an increase of 10,000 from last year, according to wildlife division chief Randy Kreil. “Mild winters have increased reproductive success and we’re above management goals in most units.” However, spring population surveys showed mule deer numbers down 20 percent from 2001. Kreil notes about 275 fewer muley tags will be issued to reflect the decline.
