Last year, South Dakota hunters tagged 48,758 whitetails (26,721 bucks), one of the state’s all-time highest whitetail kills. Mule deer hunters tagged 9,800 animals (6,659 bucks), which continued the general decline in muley kills. Gregory County has a history of producing trophy whitetails. While deer habitat in the Black Hills has declined in recent years, the Jasper fire there two years ago should be leading to some good browse and cover.
