A rebounding deer herd should bump up the total harvest this year. Big bucks traditionally come from the Northeast Kingdom and the spine of the Green Mountains, with higher densities in the Connecticut River and Champlain valleys. Groton State Forest in Washington and Caledonia counties offers good access and often holds some sizable bucks. Chittenden County is a good bet for 200-pound-plus bucks, though access in suburban areas may be tough. Because of the harsh winter in 2000-2001, antlerless deer permits will be reduced to 9,778 this year, a 35 percent reduction from last year. But the herd is in good shape.
