The best area of the state for large-racked bucks is the southeast, especially Hampton County and portions of the Western Piedmont region, according to district wildlife biologist Jay Jeffreys. The state Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) now has 550 participants who have enrolled 1.3 million acres of land. Landowners collect harvest data such as weight, age and antler measurements and provide this data to state biologists who then advise landowners and hunt clubs how to better manage their deer herds.
