Essential Outdoor Skill: Check an Arrow for Straightness

One knock against aluminum arrows is that they bend too easily. Most archers wrongly assume carbon arrows are resistant to bending. Here's how to spin-check them.

1. With your hand open and facing up, place a field-point-equipped arrow in your palm tip-down.

2. Hold the shaft with your thumb, pointer, and middle fingers.

3. With the arrow upright, snap your fingers, imparting spin on the arrow shaft.

4. As the arrow spins, watch it for any irregularities and feel for imbalance. Many times, you'll sense an imperfection without seeing it.
