Chuck had a good life, but an untimely end. The wild turkey was a beloved resident of a small Iowa town. He gained his high status by chasing, full tilt, after cars and semis that would pass through the municipality. (He did, however, leave farm equipment alone when it passed by.)
The bird first arrived in the region over a year ago. He announced his arrival by straddling the yellow line on the local highway and ruffling his feathers every time a car approached. Alas, such precocious actions are only inviting trouble. A couple of weeks ago, while standing in the road, Chuck was clipped and killed by an out-of-town driver.
