Louisiana is known as the “Sportsman’s Paradise,” and for good reason. Waterfowl, redfish and deer all have legendary status in the state. With plentiful game, many people depended on the land for employment. One sector that was nearly wiped out by the hurricane is fishing guides. Many lived close to the Gulf or the river and found their homes swept away with the ebbing tide.

Fly Fishing Trade magazine has begun a program to help professional fishermen, many of whom have lost everything. Guide for the Gulf was announced at a recent meeting of the American Fly Fishing Trade Association.

The program’s goal is to supply clothes, money and equipment to guides that will be trying to rebuild their business in the coming months. If you’re interested in finding out more, please visit www.guideforthegulf.com.
