What was once a disease isolated to a handful of states in the Midwest and West is now on the radars of hunters in the East. After high-fence deer tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease on a New York farm, the state started testing its wild herd. Within a couple of weeks a yearling in Oneida County tested positive.
With this discovery, the state DEC will petition for emergency regulations to establish a quarantine zone. Most likely mandatory check stations will be established for hunters and restrictions on handling and transporting meat will become commonplace.
