MN Bow Boyz

Mnbowboyz1_2 Hello Mike: Thought you might enjoy this photo. The bucks on the wall were shot last year during archery season. The one hanging is a 150-incher shot on the Minnesota bow opener by Wisconsinite Lucky Larry Kline.

Lucky Larry shot the buck on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. We don’t have food plots (we hunt public land) so we burn a lot of boot leather looking for just the right spots. This particular spot is inside some aspen trees. The green grasses that grow around the aspens in early September are a favorite early-season food source for bucks up North.

BTW, Lucky is becoming almost legendary in these parts for shooting huge bucks. One you might remember is his “Wisconsin Ghost” that was featured on the cover of the Jan. 2005 North American Whitetail Magazine. Also, I’m sending a photo of the 8.5 year-old giant he shot last year (below). Unfortunately, I missed that same buck, on my birthday of all days, last September 29.

Love the blog, keep up the good work, Drew

Drew: Love the photo of the boyz hanging out in the skinning shed after a day when one of the gang whacks a buck–that camaraderie is what it’s all about.

I notice that Larry put a smoking shot on that buck’s lungs, I know he didn’t go far.

Sept_17_07 Thanks for the tip about hunting green grasses around aspens. Alert to ZONERS who hunt up North: Try that over the next couple of weeks if you can, before it gets too cold and the feed changes. You might smack a 150-incher too.

Drew, that you guys work hard to kill bucks of this quality on public land with your bows makes your story all the better my friend.

Finally, rub Lucky’s head for me. That boy is on a roll. Hopefully some of it will rub off on me and I’ll get my big drop-tine this fall 🙂 Good luck the rest of the way, Hanback

BTW, these stories/photos are what the ZONE is all about: a mix of hard-core hunting, good times, hot tips and big racks. Shoot me an email anytime.
