After three rounds featuring 16 of the country’s biggest bucks, the final match for our Battle of the Bucks 2014 contest pitted a giant whitetail from the Midwest against a beast muley from the West. And for the first time in ages, a muley has claimed the title of Deer of the Year. Csimpson89’s “Monster in the Quakies” received a deciding 91 percent of your votes.

Here’s a look at Csimpson89’s caption for his entry:

“I was hunting for mule deer and elk in Jackson County, Colorado during the second rifle season. It was about 2:30 PM when I noticed a buck about 350 yards away, slowly feeding my direction. After about ten minutes, he had fed to within 25 yards of me. Two broadside shots later, he was down within 20 yards of where I had shot him. He is my first buck, and certainly is a buck of a lifetime.”

Congratulations, Csimpson89, on this beautiful buck.

Each year, we round up photos of the country’s biggest bucks and most thrilling hunting stories for the Outdoor Life Deer of the Year contest. We started off with 16 finalists for the reader’s choice award and divided them by region. Bucks advanced to the next round based on readers’ votes. The overall winner will be awarded two Bushnell trail cameras (valued at $350) and eternal bragging rights.
