The first Bassmaster Classic was held on Lake Mead, Nev. in 1971. Bobby Murray of Hot Springs, Ark. took home the first place prize of $10,000. The 42nd annual Bassmasters Classic will be held out at the Red River in Shreveport, La. this year, where 49 of the nation’s finest bass fishermen will be vying for the $500,000 top prize.
Plenty of folks are putting their money on Kevin VanDam, a four-time Bassmaster Classic champion, and multiple Angler of the Year winner. However, my money is on the soft-spoken Jasper, Texas native Todd Faircloth. Why? It’s simple. Faircloth cut his professional angling
teeth on the Red River.
Some pundits have picked New Jersey’s Mike Iaconelli as the winner, citing his 2009 runner-up finish in the Classic on the Red River. While Iaconelli is a great angler, he doesn’t have the vast knowledge of the Red River like Faircloth does.
For the Kevin VanDam fans out there, remember that his last visit to the Red River found him finishing in 30th place at the 2009 Classic.
So who are you pulling for to win the 42nd Bassmaster Classic? What say you?
