Check out this Ducks Unlimited video from Mike Stewart at Wildrose Kennels. It’s on reading your dog’s body language and discusses cues like lip licking, tail height and attitude.

Reading your dog is essential to training. If you’re correcting your dog too harshly or at the wrong time, no learning will take place. If your dog is blowing you off, avoiding eye contact or is distracted, no learning is taking place.

I especially like the bit about lip licking in this video. Mike captures several good instances of the acceptance/calming signal. I’ve seen this used with pointing dogs on the whoa post as well. After the dog stands on the post, they’re left to sit (well, stand) and contemplate what’s going on around them and within themselves until some sort of acceptance signal is shown (lip lick, yawn or other sign).
