Barney Fife is alive and well in Beloit, WI

Since Jan. 1, nearly 50 guns have been stolen in Beloit, Wisc., and police are busy trying to track down where many of them are and who took them. But investigators have a message for gun owners: take responsibility for your weapons.

If not, Deputy Chief Norm Jacobs of the Beloit Police Department warns, it might be time for the city to pass an ordinance requiring gun owners who want to report a theft to supply a serial number.

Gun owners say it won't help. "When someone steals a gun they're not likely to show it to police and say yep, here's the serial number of the gun," said Greg Cheney, whose been collecting guns his entire life.
