This is the image that graced the front of the New York Post today. I have no problem with cops getting their hands on fun toys. This guy is toting an M-4 with a Surefire weapon light and it looks like it is topped off with an Aimpoint sight.

But is this for show or go? The cops deployed en mass today in New York’s transit system following the bombings that occurred in Moscow Monday. While I understand the reason for the show of force–the city has to look like it is doing something, after all–I question whether it is much an actual deterrent or just a psychological crutch.

An even bigger question is, do the cops have the training to match the toys? I wish I could say “yes” with confidence–but I don’t.
