Tips from an Olympic Shooter: How to Hit Crossers

Crossers are one of the most common shots you’ll see on the sporting clays range, and they’re also one of the hardest to make. Pro shooting instructor and Olympic medalist Dan Carlisle preaches the pull-away method to master this shot.

Here’s how it works. Mount the gun to the leading edge of the bird. Then swing the gun at the same speed as the bird, sticking just in front of that leading edge. When your eyes are able to focus on the bird and you can see sharp detail on your target, smoothly pull the gun away from the leading edge and then squeeze the trigger.

They key: Never let your gun get behind the bird.
