A New York hunter, James Hens, paid $300,000 for the 2012 Montana bighorn sheep license, according to Great Falls Tribute.

The starting price for the tag was $100,000. Hens will be able to hunt one legal or larger male mountain sheep in any hunting district in Montana this fall.

Montana offers several other big game tags for special auctions. Ten percent of the money generated from these sales goes towards the groups who made pitches to the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Foundation to sell the tags. The rest of the money goes to FWP for habitat improvement and research on the species.

Although hefty, this was not the most expensive bighorn tag ever auctioned off. According to Great Falls Tribute, the highest priced bighorn tag was sold for $310,000 in 1994.
