River Monster: 1,360 lb. Kaluga Fish Caught in China

An incredible leviathan-like 1,360-pound Kaluga fish was caught on the Heilongjiang River that borders Russia in northeast China on Tuesday, reports 11alive.com.

The Kaluga is a species of sturgeon only found in the Heilongjiang River basin. The fish is listed as critically endangered. The monster Kaluga, caught by local fisherman Chen Lin, was a female carrying an estimated 1.2 million eggs. The pregnant fish was taken to a nearby sturgeon breeding station where scientists will collect the roe and implement artificial insemination. The fry will be released back in the river.
