Last month British retailer WHSmith banned the sale of hunting and shooting magazines to anyone younger than 14 in its 1200 stores. The company caved under pressure from the UK’s largest animal rights group, and now PETA is pushing for a similar ban in the U.S.
In a letter to the Hudson Group last week, PETA’s executive vice president Tracy Reiman urged the newsstand company to not sell hunting magazines to anyone under the age of 18.
Reiman states outright that hunting magazines encourage violent behavior in young people. She also attempts to link hunting with school shootings and compares sporting magazines to pornography. Reiman even asked Hudson to move hunting magazines next to adult publications like Playboy and Penthouse so they are “out of young people’s reach and sight.”
“Like other forms of casual or thrill violence, hunting spawns a dangerous desensitization to the suffering of others,” Reiman writes. “…In this era of escalating violence, it is irresponsible and downright dangerous to allow kids access to magazines that promote killing for ‘fun.'”
