It’s a theme as old as hunting itself and indeed, in many of the “Give Us The Bird” Photo Contest entries we’ve received so far, it has been the subject of many of the entries. Here’s just a few of the ones we’ve received.
Starting out today’s photo gallery is Luke Chaney and his son, Ethan, with a central Wisconsin tom Luke tagged earlier this spring. The longbeard tipped the scales at a whopping 25 pounds and sported a 10-inch beard and 1-inch spurs.
In this next picture taken by Brent Tucker of Harlan, Iowa, he and his son pose with Brent’s bird after an awesome hunt together. Brent says it was the first time his son, Marshall, 7, got to see him actually shoot a longbeard, though Marshall had been with him once before on a successful fall hunt where a young bird was taken. Says Brent of his son: “My son loves to hunt and fish and be outdoors with me and this was a priceless moment.”
He goes on to tell us about how the evening hunt played out: “I would let out a series of yelps and wait 10 minutes or so. After a couple of these I thought I heard a gobble. I waited called again and yes it was a gobble. It came from the woods behind us. Marshall had heard it too this time. After a brief silence another call was answered by a closer gobble. I repositioned myself on the tree and readied for the shot. We could now hear the tom spitting and drumming. Another close gobble and out a hen stepped from behind a brush pile. The gobbler soon followed strutting, spitting and drumming right in front of my son and myself. Marshall whispered, ‘He’s so big!’ I said, ‘Yes I know’. The bird put on quite a show for us. I shot him about 40 minutes after we had set up. Marshall was so excited! I told him this was the best day of my life so far except for his and his sister’s births. We high fived, hugged and said a prayer to the good Lord for this special day.”
Finally, in this picture sent to us by Matthew Sell from Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Md., he shows off the father and son team, Eric and Trey Claar, as they strike a nice pose with a longbeard Sell called in for the hunters.
The turkey was taken in Potter County, Pa.
