Defying the gloom-and-doom reports that there aren't enough young people to carry on our hunting tradition, Scott Battuello (right) and Nate van Wankum, both 16, sent us this photo of them posing with a pair of jakes they took this past spring in Illinois.
The two hunters spotted a flock of hens with several jakes and a single tom in the middle of a field then used the cover of a dike on the edge of the field to move into position. Scott and Nate climbed into the creek then waded it to the edge of the field where they crawled up into some weeds for a view of the field. With a little calling, they pulled the jakes into range.
"The (jakes) spotted us and were getting antsy," writes Scott. "We whispered 'one, two, three' and shot at the same time, both taking a separate jake."
Scott and Nate will be entered into our "Give Us The Bird" contest with prizes offered by Carry-Lite, Hunter's Specialties, Knight & Hale, Quaker Boy, Primos, Woodhaven Custom Calls and Woods Wise. For complete details and rules, click here.
Oh, and if you were still planning on entering a photo in the contest, you better hurry up, the deadline is July 10!
