With the exception of fellow Strut Zoner and good buddy Gerry Bethge whose rig died recently (been there; done that), most of us turkey hunters love our trucks. We use our pickups to rumble along dirt roads in the spring. We hop out, hammer a crow call or owl hooter, fire up the ignition again, and move on. Gobblers hear that approach enough and I have to wonder if they don’t begin to locate us.
Yep, trucks will take you deeper into the woods, and walking will take you longer. Is there a compromise to these two extremes? Yes.
Whether you’re trying to keep in shape here in the off-season, or scouting to get a feel for the ’08 hatch to hunt autumn turkeys, a mountain bike provides two quiet wheels to allow you to cover more ground, and in faster time than two legs. Next spring, a camo bike will let you scout farther, hunt deeper, and in relative silence.
Good news: The folks at Mossy Oak and Pacific Outdoors figured this one out before we did.
The new Wilderness Series of camouflage bicycles are dipped and coated in Break-Up® camouflage from Mossy Oak. The camouflage on the bikes allows a turkey chaser to take a bike hunting without the shiny frame or chrome that could compromise matters. The frame is dipped in camouflage the same as guns and bows, and the rims and spokes are powder-coated matte black.
The bikes are welded aluminum and include Shimano shifters and drivetrains. Yep, there are options—three of ‘em. The Wilderness Series offers the 26″ Mountain Hunter, 26″ Game Tracker and the youth model 20″ Trail Tamer. The Mountain Hunter has 24 speeds, front and rear suspension, a front disc brake and trigger shifters. The Game Tracker offers 21 speeds, grip shifters, front suspension and linear pull brakes. The Trail Tamer comes with seven speeds, grip shifters, front suspension, and linear pull brakes.
“But what about my shotgun or archery tackle?” you ask. Plan on bowhunting your turkey? The Bow Locker fits on the seat post and allows for easy transport of any bow due to its ability to adjust to most bow designs. Sticking with the shotgun? The Gun Locker™ attaches to the seat post and has adjustable straps to fit most hard gun cases.
