Kentucky’s general spring season for wild turkeys opens this coming Saturday, April 17. Some 90,000 KY hunters are expected to turkey hunt this spring. Strut Zone will be there on Opening Day to bring you a full report.
According to state officials, the number of 2-year-old gobblers is at record levels, and biologists predict a good season this year. During the recently concluded youth-only turkey weekend, April 3-4, hunters took more than 1,800 gobblers. One of them was my buddy Tim Herald’s son Drew.
Herald reports this on the recent youth-only season: “Best gobbling I have heard in 10 years in KY. Saw 12 longbeards in the first 15 minutes. Two butterballs strutted by at 3 yards and Drew dropped the hammer on this guy at 11 steps. 7:21 a.m. of KY Youth season. Pretty good morning.”
