Here we are heading into mid April and at this time of the year the northern states are usually in full pre-breeding gobbling. Here in North Dakota the birds are still in larger groups. I found 2 adult toms hanging with a dozen hens and couldn’t convince them to come my way. The temperature was about 40 degrees, cloudy and with an east wind. Not optimum conditions and it showed as the birds went silent 5 minutes after coming off their roost.
As we head into the weekend, we are blessed with a full moon on Sunday the 17th. If I had to pick my favorite time to call, with weather permitting, it is always the full moon period in April. Let’s see if the weather will cooperate in your region:
NE – Friday should be excellent before showers and wind move in for the weekend. A clearing period before the next front early next week should be very good also. Best days: April 15th, 19th and 20th.
SE – Wind Friday and storms Saturday make things a bit slow to start the weekend. The good news: Sunday conditions in most areas look great. Early to mid-week also follow suit with good conditions for calling. Best days: April 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th.
Great Lakes – Showers and wind dominate most of this region. Sunday could be good, but will be unseasonably cool. Clearing and warming by the end of next week are good bets. Best days: April 17th, 21st and 22nd.
SC – The wind in many areas on Friday will slow birds up a bit. But the weekend looks great in and around the full moon. This region should be real hot most of next week. Best days: April 16th, 17th, 18th and 20th.
NC – Snow and wind Friday gives way to fair weather on Saturday. Most of next week will be cooler than normal. Things should pick up by next Thursday with clearing and warming. Best days: April 16th, 18th, 20th and 21st.
NW – Friday brings showers, than warming and clearing make Sunday through Wednesday very good. Best days: April 17th to 20th.
SW – This coming weekend looks great and after a day of showers on Monday it should heat up once again. Best days: April 15th, 16th, 17th and 21st.
Moon – The 15th through the 19th are great moon times. Especially in the morning hours after the birds come off of roost.
Tip** – Temperature affects the birds’ vocalization. Check your areas average highs. On days with the temps above average by 3 to 5 degrees minimum you will find the toms more active and vocal. Watch out for the wind though as it can void this effect. Good Luck!
