# Gear Tip: Tune a Turkey Box Call with Homemade Rosin

Pine pitch makes the perfect rosin for turkey box calls. It works wet, and one treatment lasts an entire season. You’ll need about a half a cup for a small batch of rosin. Scrape the sap from a tree with your pocketknife into a soup can and set it over a camp stove or small fire. It’s best to do this outdoors, as rendering sap stinks. Stir the sap as it melts and let it simmer for a few minutes to cook off any moisture. Pour the molten sap through a small piece of window screen set over a tinfoil mold about the size of a matchbox. This will filter out any dirt, bark, and other debris. Let the rosin cool, then break off a small piece. Use the pad of your thumb to work into the lid of the box call.
