Pheasants: Day 2

See Day 1 HERE! Day 2 of the Outdoor Life, Pheasants Forever, Benelli On Assignment hunt in Isabel, South Dakota broke with cloudy skies and chilly temperatures. The steady rain of Day 1, however, shifted eastward and it was "game on" on the high prairie. Here, Benelli television's host Joe Coogan unloads our guns for the hunt.
Firesteel Creek Hunting Lodge (www.firesteelcreeklodge.com) hunting lands include thousands of acres of nesting, feeding and loafing cover. Here, in the foreground, is a foodplot bordered by yet-to-be-harvested sunflowers. The abundance of prime habitat makes for a healthy wild pheasant population and challenging hunting.
A beaming Joe Coogan shows off a high-prairie bonus bird--a sharptail grouse. Coogan slipped up on covey of sharptails and made a fine 40-yard shot.
Deceivingly fast flyers, sharptails are a test for even the best of shotgunners.
This grouse is worth a final look before finding its way into a vest pocket.
Many hours of filming are necessary in order to produce a single half-hour television program. Here, Coogan and Pheasants Forever's Joe Duggan discuss PF's conservation efforts aimed at sustaining healthy ringneck populations throughout their range. Guides and dogs catch a quick breather before hitting the next foodplot.
If ever there was a hot hand, Pheasants Forever's Joe Duggan had it. Here, Duggan proudly displays a high-prairie triple: a prairie chicken, ringneck and Hungarian partridge.
As well as our group did on ringnecks, a prairie chicken and sharptail still proved to be the prized birds of the day.
Perhaps a typical day at Firesteel Creek Hunting Lodge, but a very special day for Outdoor Life, Benelli On Assignment and Pheasants Forever. Can it get any better? I guess we'll find out tomorrow, our final day of the hunt. See Day 1 HERE! SEE VIDEOS HERE

The rain quit and the ringnecks flushed wild, but the Benelli On Assignment team proved more than adequate for the task. Join the hunt on the South Dakota prairie.
