A summer storm left my deer woods littered with blow-downs. One log lay across a trail and was wedged between two trees.

As soon as I cut through the log, it snapped back against my legs and pinned me to the ground.

Try as I might, I couldn’t budge the log. It would be quite some time before I was found: My nearest neighbor was more than a mile away and I didn’t have my phone. I wasn’t expected home until late the next day.

My chainsaw lay running 8 feet from where I was trapped. Luckily, I managed to hook it with a branch.

With exhaust and sawdust flying into my face, I carefully sawed through the log just inches from my leg.

A great feeling of relief temporarily numbed the pain in my legs, and I was able to hobble back to camp.
