Nestled in Lewiston, Idaho, the gateway to Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, Freedom Munitions has rapidly become a major player in ammunition production. The company specializes in new and remanufactured pistol and rifle ammunition. Its focus on cutting-edge technology, near-fanatical quality control, and an uncompromising commitment to innovation set FM apart. This commitment to quality has earned the trust of many recreational and professional shooters and propelled the company to become the largest direct-to-consumer ammo manufacturer in the market.
Freedom pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in ammo production while producing an array of products, from defense and subsonic options to competition-grade pistol and rifle ammo.
This isn’t merely a cartridge-assembly company—Freedom Munitions is a vertically integrated manufacturer of ammunition, components, and loading equipment. The company even developed and built the loading machinery the ammo factory uses, giving them unprecedented control over quality control during the entire manufacturing process. That equipment is sold to the public under the Ammo Load Worldwide brand.
The ammo factory is part of a manufacturing facility that includes an on-site ballistics lab, an underground test shooting range, and a new facility dedicated solely to rifle case production.
The Freedom Munitions Ballistics Lab and Underground Range

Within the FM manufacturing facility, you’ll find a ballistics lab that includes a 100-yard underground shooting tunnel where employees ensure that every round the company produces meets the highest standards of performance. This includes velocity and pressure tests using piezoelectric pressure sensors, electronic chronographs, and calibrated test barrels.
Overall performance evaluations are also conducted in the lab to ensure every lot of ammunition meets the strictest standards for performance and reliability. Data gathered from regular testing is used to continually improve the FM manufacturing process.
The New Rifle Case Production Facility

In an expansion of Freedom Munitions’ production capabilities, the ribbon was recently cut on a 10,000-square-foot facility solely dedicated to producing rifle cartridge cases—an initiative that began in 2022.
This new building allows FM to make their .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO cases in-house instead of sourcing them from other manufacturers, giving the ammo maker more control over quality and pricing, while ensuring better consistency and quality for a major component of its rifle ammo.
The rifle case facility features state-of-the-art machinery operated by highly trained staff, adding the final piece to the puzzle that allows Freedom Munitions to control the entire .223/5.56 manufacturing process, from case production to bullet manufacturing. But that capability is just the tip of the iceberg. FM says the case facility will soon begin producing .30-caliber cases for .308 Winchester cartridges and other rounds.
Defense, Subsonic, and Match-Grade Ammo Lines

Freedom Munitions is all about specialized ammo options. Its custom designed, popular ammo brands include the X-DEF self-defense line, the HUSH subsonic line, the Big Grains big-bore ammo line, and the ProMatch competition-grade line of premium ammunition.
X-DEF self-defense ammo provides the ultimate stopping power in self-defense situations. The 9mm pistol factory-new ammo has proven penetration of 12 to 18 inches in ballistic gel. The brass cases are loaded with X-Treme 115-, 124-, 135-, or 147-grain hollowpoint bullets that boast 99% weight retention. X-DEF is also available in 10mm, .380 Auto, .357 SIG, .38 Special, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, .357 Mag, and .44 Mag.
The HUSH subsonic ammo line was designed from the ground up to provide the best in affordability, reliability, and clean shooting in suppressed pistols and rifles. Freedom Munitions ballisticians working in the ballistic lab developed each load for use with suppressors. The powder burns fast and clean, with guaranteed subsonic velocities.
The HUSH 9mm ammo is available in 147-grain or 165-grain loads, both topped with round-nosed bullets that leave a can with an average muzzle velocity of 870 fps. HUSH subsonic ammo is also available in 10mm, .45 ACP, .40 S&W, and .300 BLK (FMJ).
The ProMatch line of precision pistol and rifle ammunition delivers competition-quality ammo at a fraction of the traditional match-grade price. Featuring the company’s X-Treme copper-plated bullets, these rounds are loaded for consistency and top-tier accuracy, based on development and testing in the state-of-the-art Freedom Munitions ballistics lab.
The 9mm ProMatch offerings are topped with 135-, 147-, or 124-grain HP bullets. All three meet “minor” power factor criteria comfortably while still ensuring a soft recoil impulse and fast follow-up shots.
ProMatch is also available in .223 Rem, featuring a 77-grain hollowpoint boat-tail bullet moving at 2,450 fps from a 16-inch barrel.
Additionally, Freedom Munitions is the largest direct-to-consumer manufacturer of ammunition and components in the United States, providing shooters across the country with high-quality products at competitive prices.
Components are produced under the X-Treme Bullets division which develops and utilizes a proven plating process to provide high performance bullets and cases direct to competition shooters, law enforcement personnel, commercial loaders and reloaders
The company also owns and produces LAX Ammunition with four retail locations and a firing range in Southern California.
