Sportsmen Beware!

Sportsmen Beware! - 9

A newly formed congressional caucus comprised of those who generally share the views and agenda held by the country’s most outspoken and politically active anti-hunting organization has yet to make any serious legislative inroads on Capitol Hill, but deserves the continued watchful eye of sportsmen.

There was relatively little fanfare surrounding the formation of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus earlier this year, but it attracted the attention of many in the hunting and wildlife conservation community, not as much because of its name, but because of its primary ally.

Sportsmen’s groups are acutely aware that the Washington, DC-based Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is the most politically entrenched and fiscally powerful anti-hunting organization currently in operation. The animal-rights behemoth has helped finance the anti-hunting side of literally every hunting-related ballot initiative effort for the past two decades; on subjects ranging from dove-hunting in Ohio and spring bear hunting in Colorado, to lion hunting with hounds in Washington and trapping in Arizona.

So, when the leaders of the HSUS roundly hailed the formation of a congressional caucus whose main agenda includes “animal welfare issues,” it sent up bright red warning flags to hunters and wildlife managers across the country.

Chaired by Reps. Jim Moran (D-VA) and Elton Gallegly (R-CA), CAPC purports to raise awareness of animal welfare issues in Congress and attempt to build coalitions in support of “common sense, humane animal welfare laws.”

On his Web site, Rep. Gallegly is identified as a champion of animal rights. Rep. Moran’s biography notes his “near-perfect ratings from the League of Conservation Voters and other similar scores from organizations committed to animal protection (and) gun control.”

Just weeks ago, caucus member Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY), an outspoken critic of trapping as a wildlife management tool, introduced her second anti-trapping bill in the past three years. Lowey’s HR 3710, the “Refuge From Cruel Trapping Act,” would make it illegal to use any trap that will “kill or capture wildlife by physically restraining any part of the animal” within the National Wildlife Refuge System. More than half of the bill’s 39 current co-sponsors are members of the CAPC.

The time has come to recruit a primary challenger to Gallegly or even support the Democrat just to get him out of there. Anyone out there from ventura, simi valley or thousand oaks, ca? Congressman Gallegly has got to go!

what a surprise that this came from someone in CA! if the humane society spent this much money on domestic pets that are rounded up daily off the streets, they wouldn't have to kill them.

Here is the reason to not only be watchful but to stir the pot. The H$U$ is a very powerful group who wants to take away our rights. They want us to neither "own nor exploit any animal". If we do not get some folks with common sense on this commitee that are hunters, fishers, animal owners, farmers, ect then we are the perverbial screwed. They will stop all hunting, they will stop all eating of meat, they will make us give up our pets. They are already trying this in many states. One state at a time and if their agenda does not pass on a state level then they are going one city at a time. Mandatory spay and neuter is just one of the ploys and new laws that they are getting passed. Their premise is the world is flooded with unwanted dogs and cats so lets stop people from breeding. Dogs and cats are property, they fall under the 4th and 14th Amendments to the Constitution of the US. The Animal Rights do not care about your constitutional rights. Do you own animals? Do you want to be able to breed and show your animals? Then now is the time to care and start fighting back. In these cities with mandatory spay and neuter laws where will the next puppy or kitten come from? Won't be from a loving home that you know how it was bred and raised. Think about it. Do you want to pay 4-6 dollars a dozen for your eggs? If H$U$ continues to pass farm bills like the one that was passed in CA this last year that is just what will happen. YES we do need to care, we need to stir that pot with a big stick and we need to vote these people out of office today!

I for one and am all for getting this out in the forefront and open. I have a buddy who is a hunter, but votes party lines and not issues and now he is all concerned about the "Czar" that Obama placed in control of the Dept of the Interior. This "Czar" is one of the biggest antis in the country today...my point is, if us, as hunters and trappers, don't know what issues/agendas are being quietly pushed through D.C. then our rights will certainly wilt away. I say no more mr/mrs nice guy/gal anymore...treating non-hunters w/ kid gloves is no longer an option and we need to stand up for ourselves and our rights and start hitting them back.

Well this group makes a ton of money from protesting the seal hunt in Canada. This hunt is conducted for wildlife management and conservation purposes. The seal product industry is but a by product...a way to use the culled carcasses and make a living for rural and aboriginal Canadians. But HSUS want to stop this with misinformation.

Off Newfoundlands coast live almost 6 million Harp seals. Each year 5% of this herd may be culled. In Newfoundland the seals are shot with a rifle. International and national veterinarian organizations have concluded it is a humane and sustainable hunt, even when conducted with a Hakapik. The Harp seal has been designated least worry in regards to extinction, by international wildlife conservation groups.

Why do i mention this? Well, that money they raise from the seal hunt is used for HSUS agendas and lobbying. Ultimately their agenda effects you folks.

As a side note , despite the fact that IFAW, PETA and HSUS protest the Canadian seal hunt, they stood by and watched the Caribbean monk seal go extinct. They also are doing nothing for the Mediterranean and Hawaiian monk seals which are on the brink of extinction. Those species aren't the money maker the Harp seal is. By the way, white coated seals have been illegal to hunt since the mid 80s, but this group won't tell you that.
European countries also take part in an annual seal cull, as also happens in Alaska.

So there you have it. Seal protest money gets used by HSUS to fund and lobby for agendas that will effect Americans. The ironic thing is I bet they receive a lot of donations from Americans.
