“The peaceable part of mankind will be continually overrun by the vile and abandoned while they neglect the means of self-defence. The supposed quietude of a good man allures the ruffian; while on the other hand, arms like laws discourage and keep the invader and the plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. The balance of power is the scale of peace. The same balance would be preserved were all the world destitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not, others dare not lay them aside.... Horrid mischief would ensue were one half the world deprived of the use of them; . . . the weak will become prey.”
-Thomas Paine (1737-1809), in "Thoughts on Defensive War", in The Pennsylvania Magazine, July 1775

“At first glance, it may seem odd or even perverse to suggest that statutory controls on the private ownership of firearms are irrelevant to the problem of armed crime: yet that is precisely what the evidence shows. Armed crime and violent crime generally are products of ethnic and social factors unrelated to the availability of a particular type of weapon. The number of firearms required to satisfy the crime market is minute, and these are supplied no matter what controls are instituted. Controls have had serious effect on legitimate users of firearms, but there is no case, either in the history of this country (Britain) or in the experience of other countries in which controls can be shown to have restricted the flow of weapons to criminals, or in any way reduce crime.”
-Chief Inspector Colins Greenwood, West Yorkshire Constabulary, Police Review, Britain after six months of study of firearms control systems at Cambridge University

Thanks to all who have taken the time to comment. As already said, our founding fathers had experianced what citizens without personal control of their lives was about & I feel, this is why they were so careful to decree that an individual had the right to protect himself, family & property.

Throughout the history of Man, self defense of others and oneself has and is and always to be paramount.

Ask someone this very simple question. I called my Congressman’s Office today who is a 2nd Amendment supporter and on the phone was a young Man I would say in his very early 20’s.

The questions was this,
What Government entity is responsible for your personnel protection?

The Young Man answered there are laws that protect you. That’s not the answer Sir because you don’t understand the question because you cannot with all due respects understand the answer. Once again I asked him the question and again he could not understand it. If the crime is happening now and it will be over within 5 seconds you have the Police on the phone and they are 5 minutes out, who is protecting you, “The Police!” he responded. So I gave him the answer, “There is no Government entity responsible for your personnel protection!” He still didn’t get it!!! Then I told him about the Rodney King riot in California when a Government Representative said, There is no Government Office or Entity responsible for your personnel protection!! And still referring back to his original answer! What can I say?

A Brady Law supporter reportedly uttered
“But I don't want to defend myself.”

What can I say?

Having a battle of wit's with a unarmed mind?

And

How can you reason with those stuck on STUPID!

GO FIGURE!

I am not surprised by the founding fathers' comments. I agree and their words ring true to this day. As a christian I am pleased that Aquinas and Augustine were quoted. The sixth commandment only applies to the premeditated killing of a human being in peacetime anyway. The big surprise is the Dalai Lama's statement. I know buddhism is heavy on thought and philosophy, but I am indeed pleasantly surprised it is applied in such a way.

Anyone reading these and other quotes by the founding fathers shold realize that all of them would be NRA members and contacting their congressme or congress women to let them know where they stand.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
All I ask is this: Do something. Try something. Speaking out, showing up, writing a letter, a check, a strongly worded e-mail. Pick a cause -- there are few unworthy ones. Another sad truth that exemplifies the steady erosion of personal freedoms and the individual's right to protect home and family is the legal entanglement of using a firearm. They may not take away your firearm but they can make it mighty risky to use it to defend yourself. A robber breaks into your home and you shoot him as he crashes thru the door- you may be charged for the use of that firearm and his death. Perhaps the unfortunate robber sustains debilitating injuries from the bullet that stops him, an enterprising lawyer may have you paying for his rehab and support for a lifetime. How would that be for adding insult to injury? Sounds like a case of being disarmed when the firearms are still safely in the gun cabinet.
Look at the amazing leadership and genius of so many characters during the Revolution. These brilliant men put their lives on the line for ideas but were guided by commonsense. They realized that politicizing what they held dear risked everything they were striving to accomplish. United States and a host of other democratic nations around the world are in desperate need of such characters and such courageous leadership.
