I didn't know any better. I went out and harvested a big tom with my little ordinary 20 gauge 870 and only a modified choke at 43 long steps.
Seriously! I do know guns, but I underestimated the range. I thought he was about 35 yards. One 3 inch #5's put him down, but not completely dead.
I'm not a real serious turkey hunter, I'm a deer hunter. You may want one, but I don't think you have to have a dedicated turkey gun any more than you need a .300 magnum to hunt whitetail.
