After heated debate in 2003, the Minnesota State Legislature adopted a law requiring local authorities to issue handgun carry permits to qualified applicants. This, of course, sparked hand-wringing hysterics by anti-gun zealots, who predicted that allowing Americans to exercise a Constitutional right would ignite a bloodbath.
Since then, the number of state residents with handgun carry permits has increased from less than 10,000 to more than 100,000 — or, one for every 40 adults.
And, since 2006, violent crime in Minnesota has declined by 24 percent.
A link? Some say yes, some say no.
But facts is facts, as they also say.
Mona Dohman, commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune in a July 8 article that legal carrying is “neither the problem nor the solution” when it comes to crime.
“We have observed no apparent correlation between the number of permits to carry handguns and the level of criminal of activity,” Dohman said.
