My buddy Vern and I hadn’t had much luck with the channel cats on Bryan Lake, so we decided to turn in. I anchored the boat in 35 feet of glasslike water near a channel marker.
About 1:30 a.m. we awoke to the sideways pounding of 3-foot rollers. We had slipped the anchor!
I turned to start the motor when I saw a green, a white and a red light bearing down on us–a barge heading to Portland!
I fired up the motor and pulled the boat out of harm’s way just in time.
As the vessel chugged by, I slid in behind it to cut down on the wind. If that barge had hit us in the dark, its captain never would have known.
