-M1 Garand
-H&K MP5
-Beretta 92
Now I would also add these from my personal opinion
-SIG Sauer P220 (P226 could be there as well)
-M24 sniper rifle
hey michael rubio corection 1)its not a barrett 50. cal it's a barrett m82a1 that featured in call of duty 2)the only use of a 50. cal is it's for a long ranged confimed kill to ensure they dont have to wory about snipers shooting soilders. so just because you boght call of duty dosn't make you a gun expert

Michael, PLEASE shut the hell up... This is not Call of Duty, and you strike me as the sort of individual that has never fired a weapon. A .50 isn't useful for anything you will ever do in your entire life, and as a matter of fact sniper rifles are only good for one job. If something corners you or you have to engage in a close-quarters scenario, you'll wish you had that shotgun or pistol.
most shotguns should not be there. who ever did this is an idiot. most guns should be 50 cal and snipers . the hand guns realy should not be there too.

I know this post is old but being that it's still coming up in a google search I had to comment. I value the opinions of this list but it needs to be re-labeled and reevaluated. If you want to include military weapons then do so and include all of them. Giving credit to innovation and impact where its due. Garand? AK? AR platform? Mouser? ANY of the HK's? If not re-label this list as "civi-hunting pretty guns" and take half the firearms you've mentioned off since they were developed for mil purposes.
from my stand point of the best weapon systems in the world from a pistol,rifle,assult rifle,sub machine gun,and machine gun are German made hands down alot of people do not see that almost all of the firearms made are designed mostly off of German firearms.
What, no M-1 Garand,Ruger Mk I, and even worse, no Remington Nylon 66 ! Are you kidding me?
I have a few of the guns on this list, and have shot a few others. But I can tell you that the best gun ever made is the one that you can shoot well and afford to shoot often. I have a few awesome collectables, like a S&W 460 Custom and a couple Ed Brown .45s, and I love em. But at almost $2 a shell in the 460, its expensive to practice often, and the Ed Browns, I hate to take out for fear I might get em dinged...lol. My favorite is an old Remington 308 that I have had for years. Shoots insane groups and its a beauty even with all it's battle scars.
No Ithaca model 37? This was THE classic american pump shotgun! C'Mon, Has to be rated higher than a mossburg 500! What happend to the M1 Garand? This is the semi auto rifle that freed the world in WW II and is considered by most weapons experts as one of the best combat rifles ever produced. How bout letting the public decide what the 50 top guns are!!

The Benelli Super Black Eagle I and II was a revolutionary gun for waterfowlers. I think many would agree that it deserves a spot on the list.
Hymmmn, some very nice Guns!... a few i have! I got my first 12 gauge, at 12. Hunted alot, in Rhode Island, now, living in the Florida Keys!.... {No where to hunt here!...}. Can't even discharge a gun, anywhere, in Monroe County, unless, in self defense. I do, have a C.C. Permit. My carry Guns, were, my Springfield XD,.45 caliber which i love, and shot well, also, i liked, the Taurus, Millinium,.45 caliber, PT 145, 10 shots, doubled stacked magazine, also, shoots well! Than, i bought, the Taurus, "Judge", the "El Juez", model, [Gold Trigger, Hammer, and Cylinder Release], chambering, .410, [000 Buckshot, and, 45 Long Colt, 230 grain hollow points.]. The "Ultimate", Self Defense, Gun!
An Attacker, would have 2 chances, against this Gun"!...Slim, and None!... I feel "Safe", carrying, this!... lol!
One gret gun missing: the Browning .22 rimfire semi-auto carbine.
How can any list of great guns be complete without listing the smoothest operating wheelgun(Colt Python) ever made? I apologize if I overlooked it but I didn't see it.

there are several great guns that you missed but only two that I will point out from my perspective. the 35 whelan and the .303 smle. the latter has taken as much game as many of those already listed, but the whelan was around for a good while before many of the others.
others that one might consider would be some of the buffalo guns as well as the 45/70 government military weapons.
several of the shotguns you listed I have never heard of, and I try to keep up with this type of thing. seems that many of them are too new to be classed as "great".
OL says..."Here's the criteria we used to pick the guns:(1) Was the gun technologically innovative, with features later incorporated into other maker's models (2) Was it a popular gun during its era (3) Was it an effective performer for it's intended role during at the time, and (4) Did it have a lengthy service life."
None of these criteria make it a "best gun". When I think of a best gun I expect to see among others Purdy, H&H, Hartmann & Weiss not Rugers.
Surprised neither Bill Ruger's first gun, the .22 automatic pistol nor the British Short Magazine Lee-Enfield made the list.
This list is fairly biased- there are 0 Hk's on it. I can understand the G3 not making it if say the Fal had...but neither did, and the MP5 didn't make it? If you were non-comblock, that was submachinegun of choice in the 80's/90's almost without fail.
Is Hk not paying you to advertise here?
What about the Ithaca Model 37. It was designed by John Browning, was ultra light, is ambidextrous, and saw service in the military. Great shotgun!
sheasley, you should have counted.Ruger had only 2 pistols listed, 2 rifles, and one shotgun. that makes 5 total. Winchester had 5 rifles and 3 shotguns. SO maybe this really was not based on ad space, hmmm?
Clearly Ruger buys the most ad space in OL. I'm not going to go back through and count but really?... around ten- minus one or two.
Although I have owned or fired many of the guns on this list, I am disappointed that the Luger did not make the list. There is no finer shooting or looking gun than the Luger.
Surely the Luger should be on any top 50 gun list.

There is one revolver I would have liked to see in the list. The Ruger Security-Six .357 Magnum, particularly in the six inch barrel configuration. I suppose it would be excluded due to the overly small grip but the Pachmary Presentation Grip made it a solid platform that was well balanced, accurate and comfortable to shoot. Well, you can't have everything.
Hey prontoconto, a Colt, really? So how do you explain the S&W badge on the grip? Sorry old man, it's an S&W M&P .38 Spl. later renamed the Model 10. Loved the article for the most part, especially considering you included the savage model 110 which I have hunted with since I was 12 (so over 20 yrs now) and have always felt was an underrespected rifle amond most writers. But I do have to correct one thing, the colt peacemaker (originally chambered in the .45 colt round) was not chambered in the .44/40 cartridge until after the popularity of the Winchester 1873 created a demand for a pistol chambered in that cartridge (1875 was the year the "frontier" model was introduced). Also, as other have stated the Kentucky/Pennsylvania long rifle should have been included as should the Hawkens rifle, as should the M1 Garand. One of my favorites, that I used for years in Alaska, the Marlin 1895 in .45/70 gov't also deserves at least honorable mention.
I started out counting the models that I have owned or at least shot a bunch of rounds through. I lost count when I went deep into the reminisce mode. I was gratified to see that I still own some of the models mentioned. My house gun is a 1911A1, similar to what I carried overseas, (just a few refinements ;-D)
I had a Model 29 Smith but upgraded to a 629 when they came out with the Classic Hunter model. (Love that gun, and it is fun to shoot)
I have shot Colts, didn't care for them, (cylinder moves bass-ackwards and the cylinder release does too)Can you tell I have a thing for Smiths?
The M1 Garand would have been nice, makes me want to pull mine out and play with it some this weekend.
But in light of all of the possibilities, I think that the OL team did a very nice job in this spread. When there are as many great guns out there as there are, it is hard to pare it down to 50 without stepping on someone's toes.
Good Job, guys, you got most of the ones that I would have chosen. I am not sure that you would agree on all of mine but that is life. This was fun, you took me down memory lane, made me think about people and guns that had been out of mind for too long.

Most of us who love handguns and especially revolvers would agree about the Colt SAA, Ruger Blackhawk, Single Six, Colt 1911,Smith M29, Smith M41 etc. but the best of the best is still the Colt Python!
I would of added the Savage model 24,Lee Enfield,Garand,and sharps rifles to the list

While I can certainly see a case made for the Garand and even for the Wby MKV I'm quite lost with the supposed dearth of "long range guns needed in the West.". What exactly about the Rem 700/Win M70/Sav 110/Ruger #1 makes them a "brush gun" only proposition?

You included the AR15/M16 which is far from the best ever produced, it has been very controversial since it came out, and still has gotten people killed today because of design flaws.
Another rifle that should have made the list was the Weatherby. Roy Weatherby was very inovating and make some big jumps in the industry. Fn, Browning, and others made some wonderful guns. You can tell that someone in the east made this list up, as it forgets the long range guns needed in the West. I see more brush guns then real world hunting rifles.

Although I have owned or fired many of the guns on this list, I am disappointed that the Luger did not make the list. There is no finer shooting or looking gun than the Luger.
Surely the Luger should be on any top 50 gun list.

Here's the criteria we used to pick the guns:(1) Was the gun technologically innovative, with features later incorporated into other maker's models (2) Was it a popular gun during its era (3) Was it an effective performer for it's intended role during at the time, and (4) Did it have a lengthy service life.
No advertising required.

Most of us who love handguns and especially revolvers would agree about the Colt SAA, Ruger Blackhawk, Single Six, Colt 1911,Smith M29, Smith M41 etc. but the best of the best is still the Colt Python!

None of these criteria make it a "best gun". When I think of a best gun I expect to see among others Purdy, H&H, Hartmann & Weiss not Rugers.

M1 Garand is the best rifle. It should be on the list.
most shotguns should not be there. who ever did this is an idiot. most guns should be 50 cal and snipers . the hand guns realy should not be there too.
