Black Bear Takes Down Wounded Buck
Black bears are among nature's greatest opportunists. This young bear proves that point as he wrestles a wounded buck into submission.
The photographer captured a young black bear as he stumbled upon a wounded buck that had been hit by a car. Editor's Note: Some of the photos in this gallery are graphic. AdvertisementADVERTISEMENTAdvertisement |

Should have put it down, I hate watching bears eating animals that are still alive.
Well at least - mr.bear got to keep the road kill -wonder if he likes snickers candy bars.
I too would love a rack like that! But I am glad the deer didn't go to waste. All the deer carcass I see along the highways I wonder how many of them lay there for hours on hours before dying. This buck, as unfortunate as it may seem, probably suffered less and was killed sooner than it would have taked the police/state conservation officer to finally get out there and pop him.
That deer was wounded by a Ford Broadhead . The deer was lucky the bear happened along and put him out. Here where I live, I would have put them both out.
Uuummm good
I think that the person who hit the deer sould of called the police so they could of put it down. Plus you have to think of the person taking the picture. Hope fully they told the police. Unfortunate that it was a nice buck.
About the "put it out of its misery" comments, if it is out of hunting season you better have Fish & Game approval first or be prepared to pay a fine and maybe lose hunting privileges too.
Exactly how would a person go about moving that buck off the road or better yet, put it out of its misery? Especially if the driver was a woman. If you could call conservation, great, but my guess is the bear would beat those guys to the scene. Police won't kill off a wounded animal, they say it's conservations job. At least the bear got a meal, wish I could have collected the rack.
i agree with charlie that car should have stopped and called authorities!!
Great Photos !!Too bad all our "BAMBI LOVER " friends couldn't be there to witness mother nature at her finest .. we all know this deer probably got eaten alive .
good buck, bear can not beat it!!
Awesome photo!

I knew a cougar would eat deer,but I didn't know a bear would.
yum yum i bet that buck tasted great too bad ill never know go bear!
Wow! That is not s real nice way for a nice deer to die. I'd rather have it fall from my Tikka T3 30-06.

Wonder if the bear will get a full mount of the deer head or just cut the antlers off and put it on a board for his den. :-)
Nature at its best.
I think that the bear will hunt primarily along that road as long as there is road kill or other animals hit by cars for it to eat. And that could become a problem if anybody has car troubles through there.
I agree with Mr Elk, and he/she should have drug it back away from the road, if able...I'd hate to be driving down this road with Little Miss Gyrene, and have HER see this!!!
The motorist who hit the buck didn't stop to put the buck out of his misery?
Wimp
That's a nice buck! In the wild minus the car collision that buck would own that cub.
That bear looks skinny as heck, Atleast he will be fed going into fall, so life continues for the bear, the buck well.. :)
Nature at its finest.
That was a nice buck. At least he didn't go entirely to waste like so many others....
survival of the fittest... to bad that was decided by a car.
