Prophet Muskwa's main lodge is miles from the Alaska Highway, with little more than expansive tracts of muskeg in between. The only viable way to get to the lodge is via bush plane. Donlon waited for hours at a truck stop on the highway for the weather to clear enough for the plane to safely take off. Watch the videos from the Battle Lines Hunt HERE. The day after arriving at the lodge, Donlon and his hunting party loaded a train of 15 horses and set off for a six-hour horseback ride to Grizzly Lake camp, his home away from home for the next eight days. The ride to camp had its tense moments. River crossings, steep, muddy hills and the constant threat of grizzly attacks heightened Donlon's senses. At the same time, it was hard not to enjoy the beautiful vistas along the way. Watch the videos from the Battle Lines Hunt HERE. Read Captain Brian Donlon's original winning essay HERE **Semper Fi! One of Donlon's guides was Paul Stone. Paul lives is in Grand Forks, B.C., where during the off-season he teaches a guide school (250-442-2819). Over the years, Paul has guided in B.C., Saskatchewan, Alberta, Northwest Territories and Manitoba, for everything from Dall sheep to grayling. In addition to being a guide, Paul is a falconer, a wildlife photo and video tour guide, a blue belt in Shotokan karate and the father of three children. Donlon's other guide was Christine Bartosch, of Nemiah, B.C. Christine came to Vancouver from her native Austria in 1991 to work as a nanny, but soon tired of that life and sought out something a bit more adventurous. She's been wrangling or guiding since 1996 and has been with Prophet Muskwa since 2000. In fact, she did a lot of the carpentry work on the main lodge when it was being built. Christine's aunt, Heidi, is the chef at the lodge. Watch the videos from the Battle Lines Hunt HERE. Read Captain Brian Donlon's original winning essay HERE **Semper Fi! Scott Sawchuk, 18, from Kamloops, B.C., was the wrangler at Grizzly Lake camp during Donlon's hunt. Among his duties was to wake up as early as 2:00 in the morning, or whenever the first horses returned to camp from the nearby pasture where they ate and slept each night, and round up the other horses who weren't as eager to return. In grizzly country. In the dark. He'd been doing this for a few nights before he admitted he didn't have a flashlight or a gun. He was immediately supplied with both. The hunting party logged many hours and many miles on horseback over the course of the weeklong hunt, causing aching in muscles some of the hunters didn't even know they had. The area where Donlon hunted is at the very northern end of the Rocky Mountains in northeastern British Columbia. Small ponds and intertwining rivers characterize the landscape between the towering mountain peaks. Watch the videos from the Battle Lines Hunt HERE. The main cabin at Grizzly Lake camp was a cozy abode with a woodstove and a bed where Bartosch slept. All the meals were eaten here, too. The lake provided water for both drinking and cleaning. Lanterns provided light. In addition to the main cabin, there was another cabin where Stone and Sawchuck slept and one that housed Donlon and the OL editors. Other buildings at the camp included a tack shack and corral, a shower house and two outhouses. Watch the videos from the Battle Lines Hunt HERE. The scene inside the main cabin, where the hunting team spent a lot of time-due to terrible weather and fog that made hunting impossible-and quickly became very close. Donlon and the OL editors joked that Paul and Christine served as the parental figures in this quasi family, while Sawchuck was their kid brother. Michael Mohr

Forest fires are vital to the success of game populations in B.C.'s Muskwa Region. Without them, the aspens and conifers would grow too tall and thick and prevent any sunlight from getting to the undergrowth that is a huge part of the moose's and elk's diet. Moose are not nearly as wary as whitetails and other game most of us are used to hunting. Donlon and his party came upon this bedded-down cow while hiking to the top of a ridge, and spent 10 minutes taking pictures of her from no more than 15 yards away. The hunting team spent hours upon hours glassing for good bulls. The aspen and conifer stands are too thick to push through, and there's little point in still-hunting, so the best chance to kill a moose was to spot it and stalk it. It was physically demanding, both for the hunters and the horses, to get to some the best spots for glassing. The amazing views from the top of the peaks quickly made the hunters forget about their aches and pains, though. Watch the videos from the Battle Lines Hunt HERE. On August 25 it snowed. Donlon and his team had ridden up to the pass between the two mountains across the lake from camp, White Ram and Lucille. There wasn't much sign of moose, though Stone did spot tracks of what he thought was an 8-foot boar grizzly. Watch the videos from the Battle Lines Hunt HERE. The moose quarters and back straps were wrapped in cheese cloth and kept on the meat pole behind the main cabin.
