New Potential World Record Black Bear Shot in Pennsylvania

New Potential World Record Black Bear Shot in Pennsylvania

Last November Robert Christian shot this massive black bear in eastern Pennsylvania. The bruin's skull scored 23 9/16 inches, making it the biggest bear ever taken by a hunter. Gayne Young breaks the story on this world record.

Yes Wayne I had a license. LOL! @Maverick340 In 2011 Pennsylvania had a second bear season which started the first wednesday of the first week of rifle deer season. Pa has done some different things with its bear season the last ten years.

I'm not trying to be a killjoy, just asking for clarification on the article. I hunt in PA, and to the best of my knowledge, bear season never overlaps with deer season. The article says they were hunting deer when they shot the bear. Was this in a special regulations area or just a mistake in the article? Congratulations on the bear, regardless. It isn't all too often our state makes it into the world records.

Pennsylvania has a big black bear population and has some of the biggest animals in the world. Pennsylvania black bear biologist, Dr. Gary Alt, had said that the next world record black bear could come from PA, based on some of the bears he's seen. I don't know if he saw the brute in this story, but if not, there still could possibly be another world record out there. There are more bears than ever in PA, so don't be surprised if we see another story like this soon.

Great Bear
This writer hears of an 800 pounder lurking around in the Poconos waiting to be had. Experience with bear meat that when properly prepared will match up with the best pork around.

Good show Robert! What a huge and beautiful black bear. Reading this story and others about hunting back east make me really miss those beautiful woods that I hunted as a youth. I went from there to Colorado, Alaska and now, Arizona. Alaska's blackies don't have anything on this monster! Well done!

Great story, I love how this monster bear was trailing the wounded doe. Fantastic bear and super shooting with four shots hitting its the bear.
Pennsylvania and neighboring state New Jersey killed huge black bears last year. On December 8, 2012, a NJ hunter killed a 776 pound (live weight) bear. It was a new state record for New Jersey. The following day another hunter bagged a 829 pound bear (live weight) making that bear the new state record bear in New Jersey. I have not heard anything on those bears, as far as skull size or if they were even measured. If you want a monster fat bear come east. The animal rights people keep feeding the bears everyday in violation of the law. So thank the Antis.
Another fact is since 1970 till now, New Jersey only had four bear hunts. Many twenty year old monster bears swim across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania and get killed because Pa. has a bear hunt every year. The NJ Dept of Wildlife said there are plenty more out there. I will be in the New Jersey woods come bear season in December 2012. I hope the Bambi Lovers don't stop this hunt with the NJ court system. Happy bear hunting and good luck everyone.

Actually, the meat was very good and now I call my Chile recipe "World Record Black Bear Chile" . The bologna and the roasts were also very good. The amount of meat we got was about four times the amount of an average deer. So to answer your "concern" we ARE meat hunters. The "trophy" was a surprise and just sweetened the pot.
