Using the right hook will help your bait run naturally, get you more hook-ups, and save you some cash. Professional bass fisherman Kevin VanDam is absolutely obsessive over the types of hooks he uses.
For bulky soft plastics, KVD recommends a hook with a wider gap and a built-in keeper or barb on the shaft. The keeper allows you to use extra-soft baits but not loose them every time a fish hits.
For finesse baits, select a thinner wire hook that won't be as obtrusive. And most importantly, always make sure you're fishing with a sharp hook.

I use those SK Rodents and they are a great bait. I don't know how much a keeper hook will prevent them from being torn up. They are a really soft bait. Smaller fish grab the ends of them and yank them down my EWG hook and also tear off the claws.
